A special thanks to Frank Baines Saddlery for providing this useful information.
Please follow the steps shown on this page and use the downloadable double page template guide to transfer your templates to ...
Step 1: ( back to top )
Place your existing saddle on your horse and using a piece of chalk, draw an outline of the saddle on your horse's back then remove the saddle.
You can now start taking the templates for the saddle.
Step 2: ( back to top )
Place the center of the Flexicurve across the spine of the horse where the front of the saddle sits, mould the Flexicurve 1" behind the shoulder blade to the shape of the horse ...
CAUTION: Do NOT Adjust the Flexicurve until traced onto the template sheet!
... carefully remove from the horse without altering the Flexicurve and place onto the template sheet and trace around. (this is template A)
Step 3: ( back to top )
Repeat the same procedure as step 2 but mould the Flexicurve a further 10 cms (4 inches) further towards the back of the horse and trace onto the template sheet. (this is template B)
Step 4: ( back to top )
As in the previous step, move the Flexicurve a further 10 cms (4 inches) towards the back of the horse and trace onto the template sheet. (this is template C)
Step 5: ( back to top )
Repeat again, move the Flexicurve a further 10 cms (4 inches) towards the back of the horse and trace onto the template sheet. (this is template D)
Step 6: ( back to top )
Now, the last measurement across the spine, move the Flexicurve a further 10 cms (4 inches) towards the back of the horse and trace onto the template sheet. (this is template E)
Step 7: ( back to top )
Profiles F and G run down the center of each panel. These lines can be achieved accurately by marking a chalk line down the center of each panel on the underside of your existing saddle, using a piece of chalk and a ruler.
Next, place the saddle on the horses back, when you remove the saddle the chalk lines should be visible on the horses back, approximately 3 - 4" down from the spine.
Step 8: ( back to top )
Place the Flexicurve on one line at a time and mould to the shape of the horse. (Template F is the near-side and Template G is the off-side).
Step 9: ( back to top )
Now transfer each template to the template sheet, making sure to mark down which part of the template relates to the front and back of your horse.
Step 10: ( back to top )
The final template to be taken is for the spine of your horse.
The best way to do this is to place the Flexicurve along the horses spine, putting one end at the point where Template A was taken and moulding along the spine until the point where template E was taken.
Now transfer to the template sheet, noting down which end Template A and Template E relate to.
